before it ends, we should try to start.

This summer, at the start, was about setting goals (and following through), relaxing to glorious music, writing, and finding time to enjoy all of these with friends. To quote myself (apologies for the narcissism...), June 4, 2011 I stated:
My goals for the summer: read more (whether it be comic books, fiction, or non-fiction), BIKE!, keep in touch with friends, and travel if possible. A goal I don't really need to strive for, because it seems to just *happen*, is pick up new music. And through new music comes new friends, if not vice versa as well. :)

This desire to be a goal setter was easy. Just like New Year's Resolutions it is so easy to plan for the forthcoming months when you are exceptionally bored and have no idea what else might present itself in the anticipated time that just might get in your way.. These goals I set in June seemed feasable enough. Open enough for changes. Restrictive enough to serve as a helpful reminder...and as the summer has worked itself out, we're sitting in early August and I've dabbled in near every expectation I had for the summer.

Unfortunately, for the books, I remain unsuccessful in completing any I was stuck in ca. June 4th, though I've picked up a couple more. Which is a good, but terrible thing. You see, I have a chronic habit of never finishing books. And if I can't finish a book in the summer when the weather is fine and there are less distractions, what are my chances of being able to finish them during the school year...? This is why the one 'goal' I care about is finishing ALL the books I've started this summer. Even if it means retreating away from Facebook, or evening walks. I won't let books get in the way of friends though. There are a few priorities, here...

So, on the reading list now, we have:
-Shantaram. 1/3 finished.
-Moby Dick. 1/3 finished.
-Collapse (Jared Diamond). approx. pg 130/560...
-Three Cups of Tea. 1/4 finished.
-The Map that Changed the World. pg 50-75/~250
-Watchmen. ... Part 2 maybe?
-Sandman. stopped at Ep. 4
-Cat's Cradle (Kurt Vonnegut) yet to be started.
...and I'm open to suggestions. [what have I set myself up for !?]

Biking? Well it happened pretty consistently until mid July... But I think as Matt got further from Alberta, and had more flat days without mountains, I lost my drive to keep waking up early. (Sorry Matt, I know you were pushing yourself just as hard!) That's also on the docket for the rest of August, because I know it's going to be rough being in Sackville without 2 wheels. Plus, summer snacking and indulging in ginger beer is starting to get to my gut. ;)

Friends, well I've made a few new ones. Due to good connections with Jess down in Drumheller, and a fortuitous trip to the Tyrrell Museum - Bromley's move to Athabasca to work for the local paper is a little less lonely. Plus Alex, the other new journalist, and his dog Teeko, like to go for trail walks... so my adventure meter keeps being filled in small increments. But it's enough. That, and karaoke. :)

Finally, the travel. I'm in Edmonton more frequently than I anticipated - mostly to visit Kathleen on various weekends. Though I still haven't made it back down to Drumheller. Calgary though, I did get to. Kim, Doug, and I rocked some ultimate frisbee while I was in Calgary for a few nights at the end of June.

Music happens by default. I'm gearing up for Dan Mangan's CD release in September by finding as many summer folkfest performances on Youtube as I can. Actually attending Edmonton Folk Fest this past Saturday was glorious too. Sun, dancing, food, walking barefoot in the mud... and basking in the comfort of Sackville friends finding a spontaneous reunion possible in Edmonton's Gallagher Park.

All beautiful people and places. And the fun's not over yet.
I may actually miss Alberta this September... more than usual anyways. :)

Love,
Jude.
